ERX50 – non contact, spectral color measurement. 
This instrument is based on the well proven technology of the ER50PA and ER50PAF. The compact and robust design allows the application in the rough environment of a production machine. The instrument can be used in surrounding temperatures up to 60°C (= 140 °F) without any cooling equipment. At higher temperatures a cooling cover can be used.
The new optical system allows a much higher tolerance in the distance variation of the web. Normal fluttering has no influence in the measurement.Even the reproducibility is approved compared to the old instruments ER50PA and ER50PAF.
If required, the measurement frequency can be much shorter, because of the new technology. This can help for shorter response times in the Closed Loop Color Control.
Calibration:
During the operation, the instrument performs an automatic calibration and check this calibration afterwards. Even the whiteness calibration is done automatically to adjust the UV content of the Xenon flash lamp. The operator has nothing to do with this. Every 2 weeks a basic calibration shall be done by the operators. This is very easy: just slide the external standard on the ERX50, the calibration will start automatically and LEDs will show the status of the calibration. This procedure will last app. 1 minute. Afterwards the external calibration standard is removed and the instrument is ready to measure.
 Service:
LED’s on all four sides of the instrument will show to the operators the status of the instrument.
The only movable part in the instrument is the shutter which opens the measurement aperture. The capacitors and the flash lamps are parts which should be changed once a year to guarantee the reliable operation of the instruments. All this parts are mounted on a service module called “EKX”. Only four screws have to be opened to exchange this module. A LED will indicate the wrong operation of the module and will show the operator when it has to be changed.
The instruments ER50PA and ER50PAF will still be available until May 31st 2008; after this time they are completely substituted by the new ERX50. Of course, spare parts and service will be available for at least another next 10 years.
